Midwest Sports Net is pleased to announce its inaugural Team of the Year. For 2020, that team is the Grand View Wrestling Team.
The Vikings won the 2020 NAIA national championship, their ninth consecutive national championship, which ties the collegiate mark set by Iowa (1978-1986).
Grand View had two individual champions crowned at the event. Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer won his first national title at 157 and Evan Hansen, the MWSN Male Athlete of the Year, won his fourth national championship at 197. Grand View had 10 wrestlers named All-American.
And the Vikings weren’t done making their mark on history during 2020. Grand View broke the collegiate record for consecutive dual wins on Dec. 15 when the Vikings defeated Marian at the Missouri Valley Winter Clash Duals to record their 93rd straight win. The streak stands now at 97.
Head coach Nick Mitchell, the man who started the men’s wrestling program at Grand View just 12 years ago developed it into a national power, was named Wrestling USA Magazine Coach of the Year.
