INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference’s Council of Presidents voted this week to cancel the 2021 GLVC Indoor Track & Field Championships due to ongoing concerns of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The decision was made based on guidance from the league’s athletics directors and an extensive review of the recommended testing and safety measures developed by the NCAA Sport Science Institute, as well as state and local restrictions in Indianapolis, where the event was scheduled to be hosted.
The event was originally scheduled for February 19-21 at the UIndy ARC on the campus of the University of Indianapolis.
“It is with great regret that we must announce the cancellation of the 2021 GLVC Indoor Track & Field Championships,” said GLVC Commissioner Jim Naumovich. “I applaud the efforts put forth by our coaches to propose a modified schedule of events and safety protocol, but, in the end, the logistical challenges inherent with hosting an event of this size and scope during the COVID-19 pandemic prevents us from moving forward with these championships.
“I understand that our student-athletes and coaches will be disappointed, but I also know they recognize their health and safety is our top priority,” he added. “We look forward to providing them with a meaningful competition opportunity during the 2021 GLVC Outdoor Track & Field Championships later this spring.”
Missouri S&T won the men’s indoor track & field championship in 2020 and is scheduled to host the 2021 GLVC Outdoor Championships, slated to take place May 7-9 at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. Plans are still in place to proceed with that meet.
